Metal: It Isn't What You Think

I know that a few posts back I said I would be AVOIDING some of the metal from my library. However, one day when I was pondering which album I would upload next in Algebra,(because that's what you do in Algebra) I realized that a good amount of the albums I consider to be really important just happen to be albums with a bit of heaviness to them. So, in the hopes of me posting music regularly that ISN'T metal, I'm going to get a few of the necessary ones out here.

I'll start this out with Nachtmystium - "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1"

Nachtmystium is a great black metal band who have never been afraid to step out of the black every once in a while and experiment with some new sounds, often including touches of psychedlic metal into their music. This album actually contains a saxophone solo on Seasick Park 2.

Alcest - Écailles de Lune

Alcest is a very unique band. Multi instrumentalist Niege created a great blend of shoegaze, post rock, and black metal on Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde three years ago, and has continued to blur the lines between these very different genres on Écailles de Lune. The production is much better this time around, so while I would still hesitate to call it "easy listening", it definitely has a more soothing sound to it. Unlike the first album, the vocals are not all cleanly sung and ethereal sounding on this album. If you listen to Niege's other project, Amesoeurs(I highly suggest you do), it becomes quickly apparent that he is perfectly capable of harsh metal vocals as well, which he incorporates into Alcest's music this time around.

This is without a doubt the standout track of the album, so if you want a taste of the album before you decide on downloading it or not, watch this.

and fuck it, here is the self titled Amesoeurs album as well. It mixes black metal with elements of post punk quite nicely.

and you know what? Here's Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde also. You deserve it.
